It’s great that you’ve decided to study Japanese! You will find that learning another language can be interesting and fun. With another language, you will be able to communicate with more people in more places. One thing you have to recognize is that certain languages are harder for you to learn than others, depending on your background. If you want to take the easiest path, you would choose a language not that different from your own, that uses the same alphabet at least. Japanese is a great language to study, but you have the added challenge of learning how the alphabet works and how to use its unique rules for reading, writing and speaking! Here are some hints to help you learn this new language and all that it entails.

Watch Anime! This won’t even feel like work; you can enjoy watching the show and you’ll learn new words and phrases. You should be able to find Anime, which are fast-paced animated Japanese movies and shows. Anime is now quite popular in the West, and you can find it in Japanese with subtitles or dubbed in English (which won’t do you much good!).This type of animation now has a cult following all over the Western world, and can be found in Japanese with subtitles or dubbed in English, though the latter won’t help you learn Japanese! To find Anime, just go to your local video store on search on the internet. Click on the original language option, and listen carefully while following along with the subtitles. This is a fantastic way to learn vocabulary and to pick up on how words are strung together. You’ll probably have more fun with this method of learning Japanese than any other! If you watch Anime you will start to develop your own preferences; some good ones to look for are Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop or TriGun.

Learn the basic alphabet. You do not have to learn proper spelling, but at least learn what symbols correlate to what sounds. At least then you can always make a good effort and writing down something you are trying to say. This is very useful if you ever go to Japan and are not yet fluent enough to be able to speak confidently. By doing this, you will be learning how to read in the new language as well as being able to communicate by writing things down phonetically.

Reading out loud helps a lot. In order to pronounce words correctly you will need to be able to hear your voice and the way everything comes together. You must get a feeling for the natural rhythm and flow of the language or you will never be taken serious by native speakers, so start reading and speaking the language out loud. Order a magazine or newspaper in the language you are trying to learn; just start reading out loud. Go to the bookstore and buy a Japanese book to read it out loud. Whatever you do - do not ignore this technique; it has the potential to have you speaking the language with others without making embarrassing mistakes like mispronunciation or getting stuck.

As you can see, you can use many methods to learn Japanese. The key to making the process a smooth one is to figure out which learning tips and tricks work best for you. Don’t ever get discouraged; many people have learned Japanese before, and you can too. You can even become fluent one day if you just learn a little more every day!
